crabs in a bucket

15 Aug

Have you ever been forging ahead, hitting your stride when from out of nowhere you slam into a brick wall?

It’s fairly simple, you are who you associate with.  The parasites of this world loathe when you surpass them in intelligence and upward momentum.

Climb your way to the top and not everyone is ecstatic to see your rise, many will pull you back down as quickly as possible.

Crabs in a BucketCrabs in a bucket, when one reaches the top of the bucket, just about to get out and set free, the others drag you back down!

Those low life percenter’s don’t want you to leave or get ahead, they want to keep you down in the ditches with them.  Jealous, angry and pining for what they cannot get, so they always work harder to keep you down.  Kicking you when your low, beating you with verbal and physical ailments.

“Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” If you believe that, you are just misguided.

Life is about passion and feeling is nothing but passion. The “Sticks and Stones” statement was invented to keep people strong, but it doesn’t…it keeps you around.

Listen to others statements, if they hurt you, say so.  If those that are stating them continue, move on before they drag you back into their bucket.  Those that drag you down, OWN YOU, if you let them.

FOLLOW INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE!

Who?  What Statements / Tips…

  • parents, teachers, leaders, bosses, experts
  • copy, emulate – consciously or unconsciously
  • choose to imitate those you want to be like (your reference group)
  • positive: strong, better goals
  • vision of the best person you can be; help to be guided by the folks you hang with
  • find people you respect and work to gain their trust
  • what can you actually get to? don’t say millions, it’s not even fallible; figure out what is truly believable today and set that as your first milestone goal; then set another, then another, etc…
  • pick your top three people and find the attributes you like most and work on mastering those talents for your personal growth

Live for you Karma!

kids, the undiscovered life passion

01 Aug

Now, this is an adventure one embarks on after NO thought what so ever. Seriously, if you knew everything you would have to overcome & deal with, would you do it? And are you ever really ready? ABSOLUTELY & ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Parenthood, if done right, is one of the most selfless acts a human being can embrace.

Many people believe that there is a “right” way to do things or live life. Truth be told, the only right way of living comes from your heart. The hardest part about that, is living the way you should when it isn’t the traditional path others agree with. So, in spirit of going against the grain, buy a home, one month later find out your pregnant & one year later get married. What’s wrong with that? Nothing, and that is what makes life exciting.

Raising kids is something many people cannot wait to launch into, until that first day of extreme angry that rushed over your body like a fire swallows up gasoline.

Take a deep breath, count to ten, quickly ask, “what am I feeling? Why am I so angry?”

Turns out, these little people are you. When you realize how Freudian this is, it only makes you want to run & hide. So remember, it isn’t their fault they pushed your buttons…it is yours. One minute you’re having the time of your life, looking at this little person overpowering your emotions with unconditional love, not imagining your life any other way. Then in a minute they push you over the tipping point driving you full throttle to institutional madness; something only a loving child would ever do.

However, the most beautiful attributes children bring is there creativity, I can do anything attitude & dreaming without limits; all of which they present daily. Funny how these simple actions help you grow as an individual, while ensuring you work to live full everyday. Many times when you have a character building day, just an hour with your kids, watching them learn, grow, play & live life in the present is the wake up call needed. What adult sees a balloon in the sky & becomes overwhelmed with excitement? Now that is living in the present.

Ask an adult, “can you play the violin?”; Most likely Answer, “No”
Ask a child, “can you play the violin?”; A plausible Answer, “I don’t know, I haven’t tried yet.”

All because kids are open to anything, their filter hasn’t been created by the mass sheep style thinking we can fall into.

So, the question becomes, how will you raise your kids to be wonderful people?

It comes from a movie, “What Women Want” with Mel Gibson & Helen Hunt. You know, the one where he could hear what women were thinking, as if they were speaking it to him. Well, in this movie was a bit of wisdom. A scene where he try’s to relate with his 16 year old daughter in a cafe, when she states, “now you want to be my father?” Yes, bad timing on his part, and not the best approach with teenagers. However, in this comes a plan.

At least once a month have a breakfast date with one of my kids to sit and just listen to anything they have to say, without retribution. Now, understand, when they are young, say 4, it is very easy. Who the heck knows how it will turn out in the next 10 years, but at least the door is available and the practice of open communications will not be foreign.

Growing up, many don’t really have strong grownups they can turn to for simple advice or help. Teenage years are tough and boy can kids be mean; like alligators in a death roll with a water buffalo.

And that is the JOY of being a parent. If you slow down just a bit, you are able to really sit and ponder about the tough calls to come. Questioning, how can I help to mold my children into self reliant, intelligent, good hearted, contributing people to this world? There is no right answer, so do your best, listen, learn and have fun.

Many days lie ahead where turmoil will turn to lessons that turn to happiness and perhaps turn back to turmoil. And oh the adventure it has & will be.

Live for your passion.

never say die

10 Jul

After a 2-2 tie and then beating Brazil 5-3 in a final shootout; the ladies of American soccer are moving on to the semifinals. This was an exceptional match, where they battled the remaining 26 minutes of regulation, then an additional 30 minutes of overtime, a player down after a strong defensive play led to a red card for Rachel Buehler. Hey, that’s what can happen in the heat of battle. Some you get away with, some you don’t.

The mighty Americans continued to battle, fighting down to the wire.  When, in the 122 minute of the game Megan Rapinoe fires a next to perfect cross for a leaping Abby Wambach, heading the ball, hitting the back of the net as if it were meant to be there.

Attitude, teamwork and desire make for a strong competitor. Harnessing these through intense focus, anything is possible. These soccer players are surly to bring an exciting end to the World Cup!

about prices

06 Jul

Sales is one of the most rewarding jobs, and just in case you didn’t know, everybody is in sales!

Having a brand behind you is very rewarding when helping to push a product or service, typically making it a bit easier.  Simply due to all the support you receive throughout every stage; marketing, research, go to market strategy, etc…  One advantage is the option to buy the business, provided you are able to build the business case incorporating a strong recovery model.  In the end, if you are unable to build a relationship centered around value, loosing is pretty much your destiny.

RFP Business Recovery Example:

RFP Business Recovery Example

Now, take being in business for yourself; you have a very BIG decision to make.  Commoditize or not…?

When you start building your brand, answer a couple options:

  1. Are you trying to compete with the big boys on price (bad & hard)?
  2. Find a niche for value you can provide (easier to move, decide & simply do)
  3. Stick to your guns (easy to revert if things go south, i.e. – economy)
  4. Find multiple paths for sales; i.e. – lunch at close to cost (that’s your marketing – proof); something to help keep the lights on, advertise for you, without giving stuff away
  5. Non-profits will kill you, if you let them; pick one or two charities you can devote time & money, if feasible , so your impact is consistent & great

KNOWLEDGE is not power, WISDOM is!

About Prices by John Ruskin

It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little.

When you pay too much, you lose a little money; that is all.

When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It can’t be done.

If you deal with the lowest bidder it is well to add something for the risk you run.

And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better.

There is hardly anything in the world that someone can’t make a little worse and sell a little cheaper.

And people who consider price alone are this man’s lawful prey.

- John Ruskin 1819-1900

keep it up alamo drafthouse

10 Jun

So, this is obviously not a NEW story, but living in Austin I am a total fan of Alamo Drafthouse.  They bring a great, cool twist to leisurely watching movies.

Also, being in Austin, I got to listen to the idiot that is still standing by her actions.  First, she is 19 years old & gives off a very FU style attitude (at least she did on the radio this morning; 98.1 KVET).  As the world continues to speak & this story gets picked up over & over, people DON’T want others texting near them in a movie.

I am surprised “Tammy” (fake name) went on the radio to stand up for her actions…very Charlie Sheen-ish.

Anyways, I believe people are entitled to live life as they see fit; building life successes through adventurous exploration.  And, I believe people are inherently good & will do the right thing when put in hard situations (more times than not).  However, I also believe we miss the boat sometimes…from a considerate mentality, “I’m doing this, because it’s a free country!”  Nice attitude.

Oh well, you sleep in the bed you make & karma always catches up; good or bad!!

Enjoy the Alamo Drafthouse NO TEXTING voicemail, which they are now utilizing as a campaign; not to mention this person single handedly launched Alamo Drafthouse into the national spot light; who the heck wouldn’t enjoy that!!

three feet from gold

31 May

When I was running my start up catering biz…life greatness would change on a dime.  I’m talking glorious all is great, to absolute rock bottom.  It always followed the woes of money fluctuations; since that is how you grow & maintain your day to day business.

This story was something I told my business partner, staff, investors and myself daily.  There was something great brewing & we were in the fight of our lives to maintain direction and remain true to our core.

Three Feet From Gold

An eager entrepreneur, George,  during the gold rush was dead set on making his fortune.  So, he found a few investors, listen to folks about “where” to dig, purchased all the appropriate digging, sifting & mining equipment needed to ensure success.  Then he set out on his adventure…

Day one, “this is absolutely amazing!”

This continued for several years, which George never struck gold.  Not only did he not strike gold, he barely found any worth selling to keep his operations going.

As the defeat continued to build, he eventually made his way into town, struck up a conversation with the local barkeep expressing his last several year excursion. During this off the cuff chat, another more tenured business fellow, Mr. Huffington, caught wind that George may like to sell his equipment; so he approached and played to the down and out soul of George.

A few days later, Mr. Huffington purchased the equipment, took his directions to where it was located, hired a local geologist & headed out to make his fortune…again.

Soon after arrival, Mr. Huffington put the geologist to work, studying the land and dig patterns George had previously made.  Within days, the geologist approached Mr. Huffington and simply stated, “dig three feet due north.”

“What?” expressed Mr. Huffington, “It cannot be that easy.” However, he figured that is what he paid the man to tell him, so he fired up his equipment and went to work.  Not even a day went by and Mr. Huffington hit gold, more than he could have ever imagined.

So, why the heck tell this story?  I have seen similar experiences, and unfortunately, this is the way for many entrepreneurs and start-ups.  The only piece this story has always left out in my mind, is that George did the right thing for him.  Sure, he could have stayed in the fight, however that may have completely bankrupted him in not just money, but relationships, self-confidence and dreams.  That is one tough decision, but living to fight another day can be life saving.

So many motivational speakers state to “Never give  up” or “Always keep fighting” and yes, I agree, however you must always figure out when is when and what to fight for.

To me, George missed out on several key facts about running a business.

Keys to launching and maintaining your business/career:

  1. Timing (uncontrollable, but many times a key to success or acceleration)
  2. WHO you know (helps to open doors that may have not been available; people or knowledge)
  3. WHAT you know (vision, foresight, experience, education)
  4. What you DO (the plan: business, financial, capital)

In the end, keep fighting, just figure out what YOU are suppose to be fighting for.

business compass

22 May

There sure has been quite a bit of chatter about business plans as they pertain to “start up’s”…

“Should I write one or not write one?” That is the question.

These new found entrepreneurs that say, “You don’t need a business plan, it’s a waste of time” are completely smoking crack! Ok, some people out there are very charismatic & simply make stuff happen, and how awesome for you 2%-er’s. The other 98% are stuck dreaming, verbalizing, creating, critiquing, advice finding, revising business planning folks.

Plain & simple, YOU MUST PLAN! This is a huge benefit not only to getting your doors open, but for future growth, money raising potential and having a compass/vision to help guide you through the crap of any start up.

Another genius statement of misguidedness, “Only focus on current actions & what your venture needs right now” What, planning for growth or future changes aren’t important? Off the cuff (no plan) is a fine way to live & start a business, hell, you may even be successful for a while, but when you hit a certain level your knowledge runs out & if you are not in line with a vision…start to kiss the honeymoon goodbye!

“Real entrepreneurs don’t write a business plan, they simply make the right action at the right time” really?

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. That is the purpose of a business plan; succinctly collecting your thoughts, being ready for opportunity & making it happen for yourself.

Business plans are not just some crazy “have to do” that MBA’s state is the direct path to success. Business plans make you think about who, what, where & how; giving you a helpful road map to your dream.

A few other popular quotes:

“Five-year financial projections will assist investors with making decisions about your business and help you understand how much funding you will need for the startup & if you are able to be profitable.”

First, yes, financial projections are good to have and all this really shows is you know what the heck you are talking about. You will most likely know the industry cost percent standards allowing you to work backwards forming the most accurate projections possible. And, once you get past year one or two they become even more arbitrary, because no one can predict the future, not yet anyways.

Also, take your projections and do several things:

  • cut your revenues in half
  • multiply your expenses by two
  • extend the timeline for actually opening by 6-9 months
  • extend your timeline for seeing a profit by 2 times
  • if you still have cash leftover to stay in business, you might have a chance covering all the crap that cost money, which you forgot to include

“Businesses don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan”

How can you not agree with this? The simple act of writing succinct plans, through proactively thinking through scenarios brings you much closer to actually hitting those goals.  Also, investors are more likely to believe in you enough to extend extra lines of credit and/or loans because they might just see real & future plans to gain their ROI.

“Adjust your business plan as needed, be sure to not stray far from your original idea.”

About half right. Once again, adjust your plan as needed & if your vision changes make the appropriate changes in the business plan for moving forward. This is not a document you will read daily, probably semi-annually at best. But writing down plans, goals & execution strategies are what make them real, not undiscovered.

Potential investor meetings where presenting the business plan are some of the MOST educational periods experienced. There will be tough questions to answer, many with probably no clue of the direction, but these make you re-evaluate the current approach. Is your plan sufficient, do you believe in yourselves to know there is something great; are you on the right track…?

If planning is so bad, why have a budget? Don’t sales & numbers change as constant as everything else? ABSOLUTELY! The point is you need to have something to shoot for.

Why then do people always state, “Write your goals down; you know you will more than likely not look at them again for some time.”

By writing goals down, you begin moving from the subconscious to conscious; allowing life’s cosmic flow to interject, helping bring dreams to life. Sure, nothing ever goes as planned, so what! Vision is not about being perfect; it is about striving to make things better, through key points: plan, focus, act, practice & deliver.

Change is the only constant in life and if you have trouble accepting this you may be in trouble.

In the end, writing a business plan may or may not be for you. Become a creative thinker & dreamer by taking a dream, verbalizing it, collecting some data, envisioning the outcome & then disciplining yourself to sit down & write.  This may be a very powerful life altering practice.

Write or don’t write; you will make the call right for you!
